while importing a DTM stored in an ESRI coverage I
found a NULL problem:

gdalinfo grid25x25

Size is 8230, 9142
Coordinate System is '
Origin = (1617349.355468,5177716.393938)
Pixel Size = (25.000000,-25.000000)
Corner Coordinates:

Lower Right ( 1823099.355, 4949166.394)
Center      ( 1720224.355, 5063441.394)

  Min=-235.000/1, Max=3338.541/1
  NoData Value=65536

r.in.gdal -eo grid25x25 out=dtm25.veneto

r.info dtm25.veneto 
  Range of data:    min =  -340282346638528859811704183484516925440.000000

It seems that the ESRI NULL is misinterpreted somewhere.
Min=-235.000/1, Max=3338.541/1 are correct, it's in the Alps.

Perhaps you can look into this?
