[GRASS5] how to configure GRASS on Athlon64

./config.guess does still report "unknown" on Athlon64 systems runnig
SuSE9.1.

Not only grass, grass51 and librass (all made out of CVS after a "make
distclean"), but also with GDAL (1.2.4), ./config.guess still show
"x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu"
Looks like this causes a lot of problems not when compiling but at runtime.
For example, I get "segmentation fault" and other weird messages when
showing the recent Slovenia examples from Helena with nviz.

Knowing that this is a bug with very low priority, I would kindly like to
ask for some advice:

1) Should I install generic x86 linux on a Athlon64 machine? - I do not at
all care about maximum performance, more on a stable system.

2) Is Athlon64 a good choice or should I go back to a 32bit CPU? I am new to
Linux, so I do not know the pros and cons in linux system design. All I want
is a clean, reliable running GRASS system.

3) I use SuSE 9.1 due to the fact that the distribution and german
documentation is pretty good and there is no Debian available for AMD64.
But I want to go for the linux distribution best suitable for GRASS, so what
is the linux of choice for GRASS? (please drop pure technical, not political
answers.)

4) Is the libgrass interface still maintained and recommended for new
development or are there some new alternatives in 5.7? I do need to build
some kind of c-driver for a scanner device to bring 2d/3d raster data fast
from/into GRASS in good old read/modify/write style.

5) Finally, is here some kind of relationship tree for the packages running
with GRASS? Especially for the configuration parameters, it would be very
helpful to know what needs do be activated for a smooth system.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / With kindest regards
