[GRASS5] make error: libtool: ltconfig version `'

When building out of CVS, libgrass failed with missing version number (?): 

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/GRASS/libgrass/gis'
/bin/sh ../libtool --mode=compile gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.     -g -O2 
 -c elist.c
libtool: ltconfig version `' does not match ltmain.sh version `1.3'
Fatal configuration error.  See the libtool docs for more information.
make[1]: *** [elist.lo] Error 1
