[GRASS5] config error 'ar' on OS X

I am getting a configure error I don't recognize after cvs up today.  
The error refers to 'ar'. What is ar?

checking for ar... ar
./configure: line 2192: syntax error near unexpected token `<<<'
./configure: line 2192: `<<<<<<< configure'
