I have just updated GEM to version 1.0 on my webpage as well as in the
CVS. I have adjusted the GRASS Makefile and tools/build_html_index.sh
so that GEM, its documentation and example files get installed into
the right locations. You can now access extensive GEM documentation
from "$GISBASE/docs/html/index.html".
The executable gem gets installed in $BINDIR, just like the grass61
startup script. Now, if a user manages to install GRASS, he will
also have access to GEM.
All obvious remaining bugs have been fixed, including registration
of HTML man pages for extension modules.

It works like a charm for me now and has worked quite OK for a number
of months. I am using Linux exclusively.
I have reports from Michael that things are not so good
for Mac OS X, but I think the issues are related to the extension
packages themselves, not to GEM.
The last time I checked, everything worked fine on cygwin as well,
although only if you specify the --verbose option.

No idea about native Win32+QGIS (yet).

I think it is not necessary to label GEM beta anymore -- at least not
on Linux ...

Best,

Benjamin
