Ok, I've used
    /* must run in a term window */
    G_putenv("GRASS_UI_TERM","1");


grepping through the code I see GEM uses a lot of setenv(), so that will
need adjusting too. Everything else looks clean.

note G_setenv() is for GRASS variables (g.gisenv), not shell enviro
variables.
