v.contour2dem does nothing new to what advanced users like you are already do. 
It is a facility method made of the GRASS commands, i.e. it does things every 
GRASS user does to get the dem from a shapefile:
- v.in.ogr
- v.to.rast
- r.surf.contour
Therefore the same problems that you found with GRASS apply to this module.
v.contour2dem is just an gui.

It does the filling of depressions but it doesn't have algorythms for novalue 
wholes inside the basin, if that is what you mean.
Is that what you mean?
