[GRASS-dev] iconv a required dependency for using Freetype?

I guess I'd disagree. I know that, in principal you'd be throwing away
information to remove duplicates on the basis of font face name. But there
are 2 possibilities to balance. One is the rather slim possibility that
someone would store different fonts under identical names but in different
directories. The other is the confusion of having the same font show up
multiple times (even as luxibi.1, luxibi.2, luxibi.3, for example, if a
suffix were added) making the font list even longer. I think that the second
circumstance is much more likely and the one to avoid.
