Initial Comment:
v.db.connect -p always reports for layer 1 only. Even if I specify layer=2, it still talks about layer 1:

Vector map <pts> is connected by:
layer <1> table <pts> in database </home/grassdata/za/PERMANENT/dbf/> through driver <dbf> with key <cat>

Same happens in current 6.2 CVS.
