Comment:

 SWIG/python seems to be in much better shape now. Thanks for the tips.


 For kicks I tried {{{ python -O }}} to create basic optimized .pyo file
 instead of the .pyc. The resulting .pyo was binary equal to the .pyc file.
 Shrug.
