 Yes, that's one problem, but a problem of the viewers. Standard image
 viewers or editors like GIMP can only read type BYTE, and probably only 1
 band or 3 bands in e.g. a tiff. Other types (e.g. INT16, FLOAT32) are not
 supported by these image viewers. Not sure about the number of bands.

 GIS software can usually both read, analyse, and visualize georeferenced
 raster data as produced by r.out.gdal. The tiff colortable problem is
 already solved. Some tests are in comment 13:
