v.in.arc

I'm having a problem with v.in.arc. I have an UNGENERATED line file for a
road network digitized under ARC/INFO. There are 9,258 line segments in
the line file and 9258 corresponding lines of data in the label text
file. So far, so good.
When I begin v.in.arc, it scans the label text file and counts the
proper number of records and columns, returning:
The LABEL-TEXT file has been scanned. There a are 9259
lines in the file and 12 columns in the file.
After a short time, however, the program chokes and says:
ERROR: Premature Text-Label EOF. ID #1078 not found.
Record number 1078 is there, however, right between 1077 and 1079. There
aren't any spurious characters inserted there which might be interpreted
as an EOF either. I'v tried everything I can think of to solve the problem:
I've cut out the ID and category columns and tried to use them alone,
I've deleted everything within 5 records on either side of #1078 and
then re-entered them into the file manually, etc. Nothing works. I
have another set of files containing digitized streams for the same
mapset, and v.in.arc refuses to pass record # 1,000 in that one. Others
have worked just fine, though, including a very large file of forest
stand boundries.
I have manually checked the label text files that v.in.arc is rejecting
and can't find anything wrong with them. Can someone who is more familiar
with the program, perhaps someone at CERL or the author, Dave Johnson,
help me find out what is going wrong? I would be happy to send copies
of the files in question, if necessary.
Please respond by direct E-mail, because I'm going to suspend my list
subscriptions for the holidays. I will summarize any responses for the
net.
Thanks in advance....
