v.digit

I had been using v.digit successfully but have run into an error
that is stopping v.digit from starting.  I type v.digit and am
prompted for a vector file.  I type the vector file name and I am
given the message:    ERROR - Could not lock digitizer.
                      Check for existance of /usr/gis/locks .
                      Contact your GRASS system administrator

I am then returned to the grass prompt.  Any suggestions?
