assigning colors to raster maps

Hello,
	I am having difficulties assigning colors to a raster map with
	44 different categories. I am using d.colors and changing the
	categories one by one to get the shading I want.  The problem
	is that categories seem to change regardless of whether I change
	them or not.  Clearly I am doing something wrong.  I would
	appreciate any suggestions or others ideas.
