The only problem I've had with g.help on SGIs is a screwed up terminal
when you exit. My work round was to rename $GISBASE/bin/g.help to
$GISBASE/bin/g.help.binary and create a simple script called
$GISBASE/bin/g.help containing:

g.help.binary
tset -Q

This seems to work OK.
