Vectors areas to cell groups?

Hello GRASS Users,

I have a vector map of areas and what I want is a raster map of
all the cells inside that area (at an appropriate resolution).

Do I use v.to.rast to create a raster map of the outline and then 
somehow fill in all the cells on the inside of the resulting 
raster map? If so, how do I do the filling in? 

Or is there some other way?

Any help would be appreciated.
