I have tried from two very different systems here with identical results.
One is a Sun Sparcstation 4 running SunOS 4.1.1, and the other is
a DECstation 3100 running Ultrix 4.2.  A log of a session from the
Ultrix machine follows-- note the "-" password used to turn off the
advanced features made no difference in the problem.  This session
shows the intermittent nature of the problem, as the dir command works
sometimes, but fails mostly, at seemingly random intervals.
