d.3d_inter works in lat-long too. Talk to the CERL people, you need to add a couple lines of code. I've been using it for a couple of months now.

What works best for me is this:
. erase color white
. vertical exagg: .001
. field of view: 30
. lines only: no
. line freq: 5 (you can decrease that later)
. plot zero elevation: y or n does not seem to matter much
. box color=none
. average elevation: yes
. resolution: 0.05

Then play with the "height" of the "eye" looking at the map. The higher you go, the more likely you are to see the four corner. I work with Himmalayan regions and look at about 30.
