Artificial Neural Networks and Grass

We are thinking of building an ANN Grass Module to assist in the 
classification of different land type units - using satellite 
and other data.  

Does anyone know if this has been done before?

Any pointers, suggestions and/or advice would of course be very 
much appreciated.
