The region in GRASS is the geograohic location you are working in.  The
default region is the region you specify when you create the location 
and the one that GRASS will start with each time you begin a session with
this location.  The region can be changed once you are in GRASS with the
g.region command, so you aren't writting anything in stone when you set
the default.
