Error with v.digit on grass4.0

Greetings:

I am getting the following error when I run v.digit in grass4.0
---
Warning!  Digit not running as root.
Please consult GRASS installation manual on how to set up DIGIT
Do you want to continue any way?(y/n) [y] y
ERROR: Not able to open </home/mlp/grass4.0/myimagery-u/mlp/dig/junk1>
---
Then it quits v.digit (i.e. v.digit becomes v.quit :=))

Can some one tell me what needs to be done ?
