dems are mean

I'm still having problems with my dems.  It may be a format problem.  in a text editor I manipulated the dem, separating a few numbers that had no spaces in between, and m.dem.examine worked properly(before it gave resolution values of zero).  m.dem.extract always shows the below when reading from a file.
get_int: error reading number: 
 ( )
get_float: error reading number:
and in the first 3 parentheses I get the second,3rd & 4th letters in the quad name.
reading from a tape yields only
ERROR:tape reading error
(which also depresses me.)
Any insight?
