mapgen make.mapdef failure

GRASSuser's,

We recently came into of a HP plotter, and I've compiled mapgen code on both
a SUN IPX and SUN 386i, apparently succesfully. The problem comes when
I start running MAPGEN and its make.mapdef module.  After accepting the
default scale <24000>, the program bombs out with;

/files/grass4/mapgen/interface/make.mapdef: syntax error at line 125: 'end
of file' unexpected

and I'm dumped back to the GRASS-MAPGEN prompt.  This happens on both work-
stations.  I downloaded fresh code for src.related/mapgen/SCS/make.mapdef
from the moon and recompiled, but still get the same problem.  Any clues as
to what's happening here?
