i haven't used 4.1 or ps.map so i can't help answer the question directly,
however, i use the tried and true method of running GRASS on the mac
through macX and incase it would do you any good, here's the method we used
to output hardcopy maps (with no patterns involved) and legend to a
postscript printer:

Run GRASS on mac through macX
Display map on GRASS monitor
Display legend (d.legend) on another GRASS monitor
Open up a Word document
Click on the GRASS monitor window
Click on the Menu bar "Window" element, slide down to "Copy to Clipboard"
Use the cursor to define the window you want to copy to clipboard
Click on the Word document
Paste (under Edit menu element) the clipboard image to the document
Do the same copy-to-clipboard process to grab the legend
Add text to document as needed

SAD DILEMNA: You can't get patterns which are only used in p.map
to show up in the legend.
