GRASS4.0 vs GRASS4.1

I have installed both grass4.0 and grass4.1beta on my Sun SPARC2.
After running grass4.0, grass4.1beta no longer works.  I get a message
that suggests that the value of GISDBASE is not passed to GIS.sh (or
something like that).  I am trying to imagine what file might be used
by both and the only one that comes to mind is .grassrc. Can someone
please explain what is going on and what I need to do to be able to run
4.1 after 4.0?  Thanks
