tiff format into GRASS

Users....
	Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I've
experienced a problem in taking a tiff (5.0) file into GRASS.
Here's how I had attempted to do this:

tifftopnm {file} | pnmtorast -standard > {newfile}
GRASS: r.in.sunrast input=newfile output=grassfile

While attempting r.in.sunrast, this error message was given:

Warning, ignorinring unknown field with tag 321 (0x141)

A GRASS raster file was NOT created, due to this error and
(to my knowledge) the original tiff file was NOT corrupt.
I was able to import the original file into PCI software.

I recall a recent discussion of an "r.tiff" or "r.in.tiff",
are these available? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
