386i lives!!

Yes, Darrell, we still have the 386i. I've hidden any references to it since
your "stinging" comments over a year ago! (You were slapping around our
only, albeit ugly, child!)

The 386i is networked with our SPARClassic and a soon-to-be NBS IPX, and it
is running the digitizer via GRASS4.0 v.digit. It is also running GRASS4.0
mapgen for us, so you see, the 386i is an essential part of our GIS program
until the GRASS/Solaris2.x problems start to get ironed out. Glad I didn't
trade it in!

Clarification of my earlier posting: I'm not down on GRASS4.1, just the
combo of GRASS & Solaris2.2. If we had the money (we don't), I'd get the
version of SunOS 4.1.x that is especially designed for the Classic until both
GRASS4.1 & Solaris2.2 are "patched" with enough fixes to make it a
productive combo. I realize most of the problems come from the OS
side of the equation. If I had known of all the problems, I think I would
have pushed for a SPARC 2 instead of the Classic, but we were already more
than a generation behind with the 386i, and wanted to upgrade to the
"newest" technology.

Anyway, the systems administration education/workout has been priceless!!
(Well, I'm sure my boss could put a price tag on it.)
