Say YES to saving the current window, that IS what you want.

The zoom function saves your original  region (window) as "lastwindow"
when you start it, and when you say no, it calls up that region definition
and redisplays at that size/resolution.  (I assume you're using d.rast.zoom).
So, just say YES!!
 
If you are using d.zoom, you have to run "d.erase" before displaying your
image again, in order for the graphics screen to "reset".
