d.sites and displaying labels

Does anyone know of a way to display the site label automatically on
the graphics screen when using d.sites other than creating the label
interactively using d.labels/p.label etc.? We currently get creative
about it by converting the site to raster or vector and using d.what.rast/vect.
p.map does automatically plot the labels when the user chooses the 'yes' option
in the p.map script. Any similar tool for displaying directly on the 
graphics terminal?

Perhaps I've missed something somewhere.
