Basic setting up of GRASS

I've got most of GRASS now compiled and sort of running. How do I go 
about creating a new set of data which is separate from the 'spearfish' 
set.

Are there any 'Introduction to GRASS' documents available (preferably in 
electronic format on ftp) which discuss the various things that have to 
be done in setting up a new GRASS installation, rather than the actual 
compile procedure ?
