POSITION: system administrator - SUN, Solaris 2.x
LOCAATION: Spatial Analysis Laboratory, School of Forest REsources,
University of Arkansas at Monticello
DURATION: 12-month appointment, continued employment contingent upon
availability of funding.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Key responsibilities include system administration of
a UNIX network (SUN), software upgrades and maintenance, data maintenance
and cataloging, system backup, assigning user-ids and disk space allocation,
hardware upgrades and maintenance. Other responsibilities include
working on GIS, GPS and remote sensing projects, training and supervising
laboratory assistants, assisting the Director in workshops and demonstrations,
assist in preparation of grants, newsletters, manuscripts and demonstration
materials, cooperating with researchers on Center projects.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a master's degree or equavalent
work experience (five or more years) in computer systems (UNIX) and GIS.
A degree in forestry or natural resources is highly desirable.
Experience at the system administrator level with UNIX (SUN workstations)
and related hardware is required. Working knowledge of GIS and GPS
and related hardware is required. Working knowledge of GIS and GPS
technology is required. Knowledge of research methods, oral and
written skills and the ability to prepare published scientific materials
are desired. Research experience in natural resources is preferred.
Familiarity with GRASS, ARC/Info, ERDAS, ELAS and GPS software is also
desirable.
SALARY: $23,000 - $30,000 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
SPATIAL ANALYSIS LAB: The Spatial Analysis Lab is in the School of Forest
Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The lab has six
SUN workstations and various GIS, remote sensing, and GPS software
packages. The lab is also an important part of the Center for
Integrated Forest Management Strategies. The Lab focuses on GIS, GPS
and remote sensing research projects.
