m.dem.extract

I am a new GRASS user, and am having trouble bringing in DEM data I got from the
ftp site `edcftp.cr.usgs.gov` located at /pub/data/DEM/250.  When I run the
command m.dem.extract on this file, it tells me it is running into an unexpected
C-type record.  Can someone assist me with this problem?  Thanks.
