I just helped a fellow co-worker with the r.in.tiff program. We used the public
domain software "xv" to convert his 24-bit tiff image to both an 8-bit tiff file
and 8-bit Sun raster file. Both of these images could be imported using the
r.in.tiff command and the r.in.sunrast command. The r.in.tiff program created
the best GRASS raster file. If you have "xv", make sure the conversion setting
for the 24-bit to 8-bit conversion is set to best.
