Help inputing dted into Grass

We are trying to setup grass 4 on our Iris Indigo to read directly binary
DTED-1 data files obtained from the Canadian Department of Defense.
We seem to be stuck at reading the files (formated as in Nato STANAG document
no 3809).

any help would be greatly appreciated.
