Grass Legends

I am having problems generating legends for my grass
raster files.  Whether I use d.display or d.legend I
get a legend with ~250 entries when my raster file only
has 13 categories.

Here is what I am doing:

1) Create a raster file from an ascii file with integer values
   (0-243) using r.in.ascii.

2) I use r.reclass to classify the categories into 13 ranges.
   r.cats shows me that the r.reclass was successful.  The
   legend still has ~250 entries, one for each possible color,
   I guess.

The same thing happens when I import an ascii file with just
13 different integer values.

Does anyone have a suggestion?
