USGS 7.5 Minute DEM m.dem.extract operation

I have trouble getting m.dem.extract to work.  Using a file I ftp'd from 
the USGS server in South Dakota, and using a blocksize of 1024, the 
routine reads the section A header, and then says "Reading profile 1 of 
357 ERROR w6." Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
