Earth level projections?

I need to know if GRASS does earth - level projections of our little
planet!

I would like to get views of the earth from a space-shuttle type orbit
and perhaps later on overlay political or environmental features.

Is this the domain of SGI OpenGL and Inventor software -- ie. is GRASS
too limited to make a planetary image?  If GRASS can only handle
vertical projections facing down towards the center of the erath then
that might be acceptable for my research.

Thanks for ANY input!  I want to learn GRASS but don't want to waste
weeks if it is the wrong tool!  I am willing to modify GRASS for added
capability if this isn't a 5-year project.
