counting the number of patches in a certain class

The most simple way must be to make shell script that runs
r.patch.  Then run r.stats the the patch image and the class image.
The result could be obtained by piping the result from r.stats thru
awk or gawk, that performs the counting.

I don't have the actual example but I have done about the same thing 
counting interval classes from patches.
