Can't read cats file

I don't know how much help this will be, but I'm running GRASS 4.1.3 on
a DEC Alpha 3000/300L running OSF/1 3.0 and have not had any problems with
grass rasters that were originally put together on SUNs. I compiled grass
using the source from moon.cecer.army.mil and the patches from Berkeley.
