This is from the technical overview of the S-PLUS for ARC/INFO product:

S-PLUS for ARC/INFO consists of seven new AML commands added to ARC/INFO.
Six of these commands are for data transfer between S-PLUS and ARC/INFO,
in either direction, of three important ARC/INFO data types: coverage
attribute tables, INFO files, and GRID raster data. The remaining command
is used to execute S-PLUS from within an ARC/INFO session.
