Hello all -
I have formed a new listserv (after many positive responses) called DISTGIS.
The listserv has been formed in order to discuss, in an interdisciplinary
environment, the issues, opportunities, and potential problems (many) of
interactive GIS via the World Wide Web.
As many of you might have seen, a great deal of WWW sites offer access to images
as well as multimedia. However, very few web sites offer the user interactive
access to georeferenced data and their affiliated databases. How nice it would
be for users to remotely log on to a server, fire off a GIS user interface,
query and analyze information remotely, and then send the results back to the
local computer or printer! Now that would be empowering.
However, these types of abilities require that all the "bases are covered".
This listserv has been started to determine what those bases are, how they
can be best seen to, and to flush out what the most current issues and hurdles
are to getting a system such as this on-line.
