Problem with v.digit

Dear GRASS users:

We are suddenly having a problem with v.digit.  We are trying to 
digitize off of 1:24000 quad maps.  We first use v.reg to set up the 
registration points.  Then, in v.digit, after the fourth registration 
point is entered, the following message automaticall appears:

Points aren't spread out enough

We also get this message when we do not first use v.reg, and in  
totally unrelated locations and mapsets.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
