GRASS - can it do AVHRR-images / is it a raster-GIS-program?

Complete newbie here - Just heard of GRASS through a GIS FAQ a few 
moments ago:

Q1:     GRASS 4.1 - is this the last version

Q2:     can it do AVHRR-images   /   is it a raster-GIS-program?
