ascii.to.vect.to.rast

we can create a vect file from an ascii file which can
be displayed, but every time we run v.to.rast it
says we need to run v.support on the vect file.
we do that and the rast file is created but all categories
are the same so the raster image cannot be displayed.
how do we set the categories so that the rasterized
image is displayed.
