Accessing the Spearfish Dataset

Jerry, 
The problem is that you are not the owner of PERMANENT. Instead, create a 
mapset using your login as a name (that's the default, though you can 
name it anything). Access (read only) to the PERMANENT mapset is through 
the command "g.mapsets". Any map layers that are created or modified must 
be in _your_ mapset. This is the normal protocol for using GRASS.
