Certainly there is a collaboration... The improvements from
4.2.1 are input for 5.0. And the TclTKGRASS graphical
user interface might be the forthcoming standard GUI even
for GRASS 5.0.

I expect that 4.2.1 will be existing some time in paralle to
5.0 because the first 5.0 release will contain "only" basic
functions of GRASS. It has to grow in the near future. The
reason is that all the raster modules have to be rewritten to
support floating point values. And that takes some time.

The 4.2.1 is NOT Linux oriented but platform independent.
It is a additional service to provide the Linux binaries.
But due to my limitation of time and hardware other GRASS binaries
cannot currently be stored on the 4.2.1 main WWW-site.
At least we always check the 4.2.1 code on Solaris 2.5 and 2.6
additionally to Linux. The focus is on developing GRASS
platform independent.

In the forthcoming 5.0 there should be a converter module for
older raster files. I think it will be currently developed.

Hope this helps
