Perhaps your problems comes from the configuration of your monitor (Pc´s
monitor). GRASS works with 8 bits colormap, and if you have a monitor
with an higher resolution (16 bits, or 24 bits), GRASS  can't open his
display monitor. Try to configurate your monitor resolution with
Xconfigurator in Linux. Choose an 8 bits resolution, so open startx and
try to open one GRASS monitor display.

Try it and tell me if it works.
