Code for reading entire raster maps

Hello!

I have implemented a distributed hydrological model in GRASS. However, it runs 
pretty slow. I want to improve the efficiency by keeping rastermaps in their 
entirety in primary memory during simulation-runs, not only single rows at a 
time. Has anyone source code that shows how a raster map can be read in its 
entirety from disk and into a 2D array in computer memory.
