Gray scale

Why are images imported with r.in.tif displayed in only about 4 shades of
gray when my X display is working at 16bpp and I'm using the
XDRIVER_24bit? Is there a way to get al 256 shades displayed or do I have
to go to X with 24bit ( it'd be 800x600)?

I'm trying to overlay and georeference these images to the underlying spot
and it looks very wierd
