GRASS5 Startup under Linux (COL 1.3)

I installed the linux binaries in my Caldera Open Linux 1.3 system
following the web page instructions and get the following error message:

/usr/local/grass5/etc/gis_set:  can't load library 'libcurses.so.1'
after the welcome to grass message.
I get this whether running as user 'grass' in group 'user' or on my
individual account;  I installed as user 'grass' following a "HOW-TO
that came with my system.  I followed the tip in the README in
linux-libs about installing  elfcurses, but no joy.
I  would appreciate any pointer on where to look to clear this up.
